Making Mothering Sunday Special

Annually celebrated on the 4th Sunday in Lent (that’s 3 weeks before Easter), Mothering Sunday is the special day when we honour and celebrate our mothers.

The tradition started in England, around the 17th century, when children who worked as apprentices and domestic servants were allowed a day off to spend time with their mothers on Mid-Lent Sunday. After going to church together, the youngest children would pick flowers from roadside bushes to give to their mothers. Older siblings baked a Simnel Cake as a Mother’s Day gift.

Modern day Mother’s Day celebrates the amazing women who have nurtured, loved and supported us. On Mothering Sunday (14th March), it’s time to pay back the love and care that you’ve received unconditionally.

Mothering Role Models

As a child, the relationship that you have with your mother helps to shape your view of the world. If you’re lucky to have a strong loving and giving relationship with your mother, it can grow into a deep friendship bond that continues to enrich life in your adult years.

Unfortunately, not everyone has a mother who is great role model material. Some people have a strained or conditional relationship with their mother. And others have no relationship at all.

If you had a strong bond and your Mum has passed away, you may still feel her presence around you. Even though she is no longer with you, on Mother’s Day you can honour her memory and connect with her spirit on a soul level.

Some people have an alternative significant female who plays the mother role in their life. This could be a grandmother, or other close relative, an adoptive mother, or a foster mother or mentor.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

If your Mum is nurturing and supportive, you can show reciprocal unconditional love through thoughtful actions and deeds, and kind words. The perfect gift to give them on Mother’s Day is something that is personal…

As a picture is worth a thousand words, you can convey your heartfelt feelings with a beautiful photograph of the two of you together, presented in an attractive photo frame. Choose an evocative snap of a favourite happy memory, or include a recent shot of you with your children that she will cherish and treasure as a keepsake.

If mum loves bling, a stunning piece of rose quartz or purple amethyst crystal jewellery will enhance her auric energy and wellbeing. These crystals boast healing properties and strong love vibes.

To help heal a relationship rift with your mother, a moonstone crystal is beneficial. Moonstone possesses rebalancing calming and soothing energy, enhances empathy and intuition, and helps to clear negativity.

Every mother loves to receive a fabulous bouquet of fresh flowers on Mother’s Day. Instead of picking a random bunch, take your time selecting flowers by their special and unique meanings. Daffodils, geraniums, honeysuckle, lily-of-the-valley, Morning Glory and Calla lilies will beautifully express your feelings of love and affection.

An aromatherapy kit containing essential oils and body care products makes an excellent gift for any mother who needs some TLC. The aromatic botanicals are particularly beneficial in the treatment of stress, anxiety and other symptoms.

Reconnecting With Mum

If mum is no longer physically in your life, you can feel reconnected via a spiritual reading with an experienced medium. A psychic reading is an uplifting experience that can provide comfort and healing.

Mother’s Day is a special time when you can feel close to your mum again, and connect with her spirit on a deep soul level. It’s a lovely idea to spend Mother’s Day celebrating wonderful memories, and doing things that you loved to do together.

Celebrating Mother Nature

And don’t forget to take a moment to honour Gaia, the ancestral Mother of all life, with your presence on Mothering Sunday!

Go outdoors and take off your shoes, to feel the earth beneath your feet. Take some deep breaths to ground yourself. Visualise healing white light rising from the core of the earth and filling up your entire body. As you soak it all up, you’ll feel positively empowered.
